Using 98/99 fuel will give somewhere in the region of 2-3mpg more than 95 which is 10-13% increase in average fuel economy over the 5.5% increase in cost between unleaded and V-Power (8p) for example. If using Momentum 99 it is 5p/litre more than Tesco unleaded so represents a 3.6% increase in cost. Plus you car runs better, produces more power and the higher octane fuels are invariably cleaner.

No brainer really.

Just to add to P_G’s maths.

(Using internet found historic fuel costs)

Unleaded 134.5p/litre (£6.12 per gallon) gives 20 mpg (6.12/20 mpg = 30.51 pence per mile)
Super Unleaded 142.2/litre (£6.26 per gallon) gives 22 mpg (6.26 mpg = 29.41 pence per mile)

30.51-29.41 = 1.19 pence per mile saving by using the higher octanne and more expensive fuel.

Use the more expensive but higher octane fuel.

Fill your car with unleaded and go for a spirited drive, going through all the gears, esp 3rd and 4th, then fill with V Power and do the same.

You will never use normal unleaded again.

You don’t buy these cars with ‘miles per gallon’ in mind

But bizarrely super unleaded works out CHEAPER per mile too.

Unleaded has a higher sulphur content which means the pre-cat needs purging more often, and this is done by changing the injection/ignition timing to increase the exhaust temperature. The effect of this is that you get about 10% WORSE mpg on unleaded. So if super unleaded costs less than 10% more than unleaded, then it’s CHEAPER per mile.

Round here the price difference between unleaded and super is 7-8p, or 5% — so using super saves you money.
