Jaheim shared a lover for the soothing tunes of Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross with his grandfather who supported him throughout his journey on becoming a professional musician.

At the age of 15, Hoagland competed in three, high-profile talent contests at the famous Apollo Theater in New York City, New York. The judges were blown away by the young performers’ voice and entertaining presence on stage. Jaheim won all three of these contests which provided him with enough encouragement to chase his dreams.

Just a year later, tragedy struck the Hoagland family again. Jaheim and his brothers became orphans when their mother died in 1994. Jaheim put his energy and grief into making a name for himself as the next sexy R&B singer.

It was not an overnight success for Jaheim, he spent countless days practicing his craft, performing for less than attentive audiences, and struggling to get recording executives to listen to his music for a shot at a recording contract.

Luckily, his supportive grandfather was a member of the iconic ‘Drifters’ and was well-connected to big names in the music industry and helped his grandson in every way to accomplish his goals. The cooperation of the Hoagland patriarch helped Jaheim reach where he is today.
