How Leon Spinks Earned His Net Worth
The boxing world is harsh and often leaves professionals from the industry reeling from the consequences of being pummeled on a routine basis. Some boxers like Ali leave the industry with hundreds of millions of dollars to their name.
Unfortunately, this is not true for Leon Spinks. He retired when he was 42 after winning 26 fights and contending in 46 of these contests of human strength, endurance, and persisitance.
In 2012, Spinks was diagnosed with brain shrinkage and has been videoed slurring his speech. Leon’s physicians theorize that the condition was caused by the blows to the head he survived throughout his boxing career. In 2019, Leon shared that he was struggling with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
There is some disagreement about Leon’s net worth on the web. Some believe he’s worth about a million dollars, other less optimistic sites cite he’s worth $400,000. Either way, it doesn’t seem like enough for what the future potentially holds for him and other retired boxers.
Leon had earned a big break in 1977 during his professional boxing debut in a fight against Bob Smith who he knocked out in Las Vegas, Nevada. The following fight was a boon for Spinks too when he defeated Peter Freeman in the first round with a knockout punch. He then beat Реdrо Аgоѕtо and went on to dethrone the Іtаlіаn сhаmріоn, Ѕсоtt LеDоuх.
During the 1978 World Heavyweight Championship, he stung like a bee and brought down the iconic Muhammad Ali! Leon’s fight against Ali was his eighth professional match. There was some disagreement about the championship but won undisputedly. Unfortunately, he lost his Championship belt when he fought Ali in an unsanctioned match.
