might want to check how freely the linkage moves. I had mine sieze on me not too long ago, and it did the same by eventually getting slower and slower until it completely siezed up.

thanks for your reply mate. as it happens i was just outside checking the wipers again:-/ its really difficult to see what happens with the mechanism — it’s all covered by one huge piece of plastic which I cant take off. it covers the entire upper part, if you see what I mean. how much did you end up paying for the new system? thanks again

Try this link for guidance on fixing it.

I had the exact same problem with my Jetta and it is certainly the wiper linkage. I decided to replace the linkage instead of repairing it as in the link above. The part cost about $70, and the replacement of the linkage took about an hour and a half or so. My wiper motor was still good, hopefully yours has not overloaded itself trying to move the seized linkage.

thanks a lot — well seeing as I live in the center of town in amsterdam, and do not have a garage, I just booked it into the VW dealership repair shop — they reckon new part + labour will be 180€uros = $250!!
you VW hobyists seem clued up — what other typical problems can I expect on a 8 year old Golf 1.4L?
thanks for your time!

My wipers got stuck as well so I applied penetrating oil to the base, just under the point where the wiper arm mounts to the linkage pin.
I had to soak it the first time and wait an hour or so and then soaked it again after that. Then I turned the wipers on, grabed the wiper arm and helped the wiper to move with my hand so several cycles.
I then repeated this over the next few days and now they work fine on their own. Now whenever I think of it, I give each wiper pin another application of
penetrating oil to avoid moisture from forming in the shaft.

Not to bring this from the dead but mine just sopped working. i can hear the motor turn but no movement in the wipers. prob a broken linkage right?
I can also move the wipers freely by hand and both move together like normal with no resistance.
